Years ago, Fred faced a personal and professional crossroads. Overwhelmed by self-doubt and struggling to find his purpose, he decided to take a strengths assessment out of sheer desperation. Surprisingly, the results revealed his top strengths: gratitude, curiosity, and perseverance. There began the 360-degree turning point of Fred's life. Rather than focusing on what he lacked, he began building his life using these strengths. Fred became intentional and mindful of his character strengths when faced with both problems, as well as a blueprint for achieving his goals. He was an ardent practitioner at expressing gratitude daily, he pursued his curiosity through learning and applied perseverance to achieve his goals.

The transformation was profound. Fred not only excelled in his career but also repaired strained relationships. He became a respected leader and inspired those around him. His story illustrates the power of discovering and applying your unique character strengths—and it all started with the VIA Character Strengths framework.

What Are VIA Character Strengths?

VIA (Values in Action) Character Strengths is a scientifically validated framework that identifies 24 universal strengths inherent in all people. Developed by Dr. Martin Seligman and Dr. Christopher Peterson, the VIA framework emerged from the field of positive psychology to help people thrive by focusing on their strengths instead of their shortcomings. The time has come in the evolution of human and social sciences to not only present a dystopian point of view of human behavior via the lens of pathologies or a diseased model. But to also incorporate the sciences of human flourishing as an imperative given a broader context.

The Origin and Science Behind VIA

Unlike traditional personality tests that classify people into fixed categories, the VIA framework celebrates individuality by highlighting the unique constellation of strengths that each person possesses.

The VIA Classification of Character Strengths was born in the early 2000s as part of the positive psychology movement. This science-based approach shifted psychology from treating mental illness to fostering well-being and optimal functioning.

Dr. Seligman and Dr. Peterson identified six overarching virtues—wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence—under which the 24 strengths are organized. These strengths are universal, cutting across cultures, religions, and eras, making them a powerful tool for personal and professional development.

Applications of VIA Character Strengths

In the modern workplace, understanding and applying VIA Character Strengths is a game-changer. Here's how this framework can shape the future of work:

  1. Career Goals and Alignment - Discovering your strengths can guide you toward career paths that align with your values and passions. For example, someone with high creativity might thrive in innovation-driven roles, while a person with strong leadership qualities may excel in management.

  2. Workplace Performance - Employees who leverage their strengths are more engaged, productive, and fulfilled. A leader who emphasizes fairness (a justice strength) can foster trust and collaboration, boosting team morale and performance.

  3. Enhancing Interpersonal Relationships - Knowing your strengths and recognizing those of others can improve communication and deepen connections. For instance, a colleague with high kindness may excel in mentoring, while someone with humor can diffuse workplace tension.

The Neuroscience of Strengths

Neuroscience research underscores the benefits of focusing on strengths. Engaging your strengths activates the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and enhancing feelings of satisfaction and motivation. Over time, this strengthens neural pathways associated with positive behavior, making it easier to build habits that support personal and professional growth.

Why VIA Character Strengths Matter for the Future

As workplaces evolve, the demand for emotional intelligence, collaboration, and adaptability grows. VIA Character Strengths provide a roadmap for building these essential skills. By fostering a culture that celebrates strengths, organizations can enhance innovation, resilience, and employee well-being.
